آیا عام طور پر کہا گیا ہے کہ یہ لفظ پرتگالی الاصل ہے، کہ اس زبان میں زنانہ خدمت گار، مغلانی ، یا زنانہ اتالیق کو (آئیا) کہتے ہیں۔ اس کا مذکر ہے، بمعنی، ’’کسی نواب بچے کا اتالیقیا استاد‘‘۔ کہا گیا ہے کہ ہندوستان میں لفظ ’’آیا‘‘ اٹھارویں صدیکے وسط سے رائج ہوا۔ لیکن اس میں کوئی شک نہیں کہ یہ لفظ کسی نہ کسی شکل میں بہت سی ہندوستانی زبانوں میں موجود ہے، ضروری نہیں کہ پرتگالیوں کی آمد کے پہلے یہ لفظ یہاں معدوم رہا ہو۔ مراٹھی میں ’’ماں‘‘ کو ’’آئی‘‘ کہتے ہیں۔ اور الف ندا (مثلاًً ’’الٰہا، شاہا، خدایا ‘‘ وغیرہ) کے علاوہ الف شفقت (مثلاً’’بھائی/بھیا، اب/ابا، بہن/بہنا ‘‘ اور بہت سے ناموں کے ساتھ، مثلاً ’’مرزا صائبا، سعیداے اشرف، جلالاے طباطبائی‘‘ وغیرہ) اردو فارسی میں مستعمل ہے۔ لہٰذا یہ بالکل قرین قیاس ہے کہ لفظ ’’آیا‘‘ کو لفظ ’’آئی‘‘سے بنایا گیا ہواور اس میں الف شفقت یا الف نداہو۔ اس خیال کو تقویت اس بات سے ملتی ہے کہ پورب کی اردو میں بچوں کی دیکھ بھال کرنے والی عورت کو ’’ایّا‘‘(اول مفتوح، دوم مشدد، بروزن ’’میّا‘‘) بھی کہتے تھے۔ ’’ایّا‘‘ اور ’’آئی‘‘ کا تعلق اس بات سے بھی مستفاد ہوتا ہے کہ ’’مائی‘‘ کی ندائی شکل ’’میّا‘‘ کی طرح’’دائی‘‘ کی بھی ایک ندائیہ شکل ’’دیاّ‘‘ (اول مفتوح، دوم مشدد، بررائش وزن ’’میّا‘‘) آج بھی دیار مشرق میں مستعمل ہے۔بلکہ یوں کہیں تو غلط نہ ہو گا کہ ’’مائی‘‘کی ندائیہ صورت ’’میّا‘‘ تو اور علاقوں میں بھی معروف ہے۔دیکھئے ،’’آئی‘‘۔
