Are you someone who is often a part of enthusiastic conversations  with Urdu speaking folks? If yes, then chances are that you must’ve heard the word ‘Qaabil’ at least a few times. The meanings of this word change according to the situations, and thus, makes it all the more worthy of today’s discussion.

Ladies and gentlemen, قابل (Qaabil) is a term, with a full-fledged set of its own meanings. But, its might extends, as it is also finds place as one of Urdu’s exquisite prefixes.

When simply translated into English, it gives the meaning of ‘deserving’, ‘eligible’, ‘worthy’, ‘capable’, ‘skilful’ and ‘qualified’. But the actual charm of ‘Qaabil’ will start enthralling the Urdu fans when it is used as a prefix.

Now, the first word made up by prefixing ‘Qaabil’ is qaabil-e-e'tibaar قابِلِ اِعْتِبار which means ‘credible, trustworthy, and reliable’. Given the broad and flexible nature of this word, you may use it in a number of sentences or as phrases. For e.g., qaabil-e-e'tibaar shakhs (reliable person), qaabil-e-e'tibaar shakhsiyat (reliable personality), qaabil-e-e'tibaar guftuguu (honest conversation) and so on.

Next, we have a term that might just put you in a sense of doubt. We’re talking about qaabil-e-e’tiraaz قابل اعتراض  which means objectionable (speech, comment or any act). You can use it to smoothly express your objections in all unacceptable situations such as; qaabil-e-e’tiraaz guftuguu (objectionable conversation), qaabil-e-e’tiraaz harkat (objectionable act), qaabil-e-e’tiraaz mauqif (objectionable opinion) etc.

To express that something is worthy of attention and contemplation, we may pick the compound word ‘qaabil-e-e’tina’ قابل اعتنا which can be translated as worthy of attention, concern, consideration and heed.

You might have found yourself caught in a moment where you laid eyes on something, only for its beauty to captivate all your attention. To describe such a visual of aesthetic charm, you may call this object, scene, person or thing as ‘qaabil-e-diid’ قابلِ دِید (worth seeing). It is not just a label to mark something as beautiful, but a genuine admiration for a thing of beauty.

In the same sense of appreciation, you may also use terms like qaabil-e-diid manzar (a sight worth seeing), qaabil-e-diid jagah (a place worth seeing/visiting), qaabil-e-diid husn (admirable beauty), qaabil-e-diid muqabla (a match worth witnessing) and so on.

You see how qaabil doesn’t confine itself to something being seen? It expands to various other domains of admiration, depending on the context it is used in.

In Urdu, there are several ways to praise someone's achievement, such as qaabil-e-taa'riif (worth appreciation), qaabil-e-takriim, and qaabil-e-tahsiin. For instance, you might say qaabil-e-tahsiin koshish (praiseworthy effort) or qaabil-e-ta’riif kaam (commendable work).

In daily life, to highlight interesting or notable events, qaabil-e-zikr (worthy of mention) is a versatile expression. It can be used in phrases like qaabil-e-zikr mulaaqaatein (noteworthy meetings) and qaabil-e-zikr baatein (noteworthy talks).

For situations needing detailed consideration, qaabil-e-ghaur (worthy of consideration) is ideal. Use it in contexts like qaabil-e-ghaur mas’alaa (issue worthy of consideration) and qaabil-e-ghaur ma’amla (matter worthy of consideration).

Whether you're praising someone, noting a significant event, or considering a serious matter, these expressions will help you articulate your thoughts clearly and stylishly.
So, what are you waiting for? Add the use of 'Qaabil' and its variations to make them all the more worthy of praise and admiration!
