سانپن حرف چہارم کہیں مفتوح اور کہیں مکسور بولا جاتا ہے۔ یہ’’سانپ‘‘ کی تانیث تو ہے، لیکن اگر خصوصاً کوئی مادہ سانپ مراد لینا ہو تو بھی اس لفظ کو شاذ و نادر ہی بولتے ہیں۔ بعض لغات میں اسے’’ناگن‘‘ کا مرادف لکھا ہے، لیکن یہ بہت سرسری بول چال میں شاید ہو تو ہو، عام نہیں ہے۔ عام طورپر’’سانپن‘‘ بالوں کی اس لمبی باریک لکیر کو کہتے ہیں جو بعض گھوڑوں کے سر پر اور بعض انسانوں کی پیٹھ پر ہوتی ہے۔ اسے منحوس خیال کیا جاتا ہے۔ دیکھئے، ’’تانیث سے عاری نام، جانوروں کے‘‘، ’’دو مہی/مونہی/موہی سانپن‘‘۔
