Interesting Information on jahaaz

Etymology, the study of a word’s origin and its transformation is quite an interesting field. Urdu includes, and has embraced; words from different languages from the very beginning and these words manifest their vividness in different ways. For instance, let us take the word ‘Jahaz (Ship)’ which has been directly adopted from Arabic, in which it means ‘Saamaan (goods)’. The same word ‘Jahaz’ became ‘Jahez’, which eventually took the form of ‘Dihez’, or more commonly, ‘Dahej’, meaning dowry. Parallelly in Arabic, the apparatus used for a person’s last rites came to be known as ‘Tajhiiz’, which later became complementary to the Urdu word, ‘Takfiin’, thus the two are always used together as ‘Tajhiz-o-Takfin’. And that’s how, the word ‘Jahaz’ helped goods-carrying ships cross oceans and, thanks to the advent of technology, ‘Hawaii-Jahaz’ helped airplanes reach higher skies!
