بکرید غالب نے مکتوب بنام نبی بخش حقیر، مؤرخہ ہفتم نومبر ۳۵۸۱ میں لکھا ہے: بکرید کو کچھ کہا ہی نہیں، ایک رباعی پڑھ دی تھی۔ بظاہر یہ تلفظ اس لئے رائج ہوا کہ اس تیوہار میں بکرے بہت قربان کئے جاتے ہیں۔ اور جس طرح بکروں کے قصائی کو’’بکرقصاب‘‘ کہتے ہیں، اسی طرح اس تیوہارکو’’بکرید‘‘ کہنے لگے ہوں۔ ’’اردو لغت، تاریخی اصول پر‘‘میں اسے’’عوامی‘‘ تلفظ کہا ہے، اور کوئی سند نہیں دی ہے۔ غالب کی سند پر اسے’’عوامی‘‘ نہیں کہہ سکتے۔ یہ ضرور ہے کہ مدت دراز سے یہ تلفظ سننے میں نہیں آیا۔ اس کے درست ہونے میں کلام نہیں۔ فیلن نے اسے Popular یعنی مقبول العوام تلفظ لکھا ہے۔ شان الحق حقی نے ’’بکرید‘‘ ایک مستقل لغت کے طور پر درج کیا ہے۔ دیکھئے، ’’بخرید‘‘، ’’بقرعید‘‘، ’’بقرید‘‘، ’’بکرید‘‘۔
