- عربی حُروفِ تہجّی کا نواں ، تُرکی اور فارسی کا گیارھواں اور صوتی اعتبار سے اُردو کا اکیسواں حرف جسے ذال معجمہ یا ثخّذ اور منقوطہ بھی کہتے ہیں ، اس کی آواز زبان کی نوک کو اگلے دو دانتوں کی نوک سے مِلانے سے نِکلتی ہے ، اُردو میں اس کی آواز << ز >> اور << ظ >> سے مِلتی ہے ، حسابِ جُمل یا ابجد میں اس کے سات سو (۷۰۰) عدد فرض کیے گئے ہیں ، اُردو میں یہ حرف عموماً عربی الاصل الفاظ میں آتا ہے لیکن فارسی کے بعض الفاظ میں بھی مستعمل ہے. یہ ماہ ذوالحجہ کے مخفّف کے طور پر بھی اِستعمال ہوتا ہے.
