ولندیز اول دوم مفتوح، واؤ مجہول۔ اردو میں یورپی ملک ہالینڈ (Holland) کا نام پہلے’’ولندیز‘‘ تھا اور اس سے صفت ’’ولندیزی‘‘ بنتی تھی۔ چند دہائی پہلے تک کی کتابوں میں یہ لفظ ملتے ہیں لیکن اکثر لوگ ان کی اصل سے واقف نہیں کہ ’’ہالینڈ‘‘ اور’’ولندیز‘‘ میں بظاہر کوئی مطابقت نہیں ہے۔ دراصل ’’ولندیز‘‘ ہم لوگوں نے ہالینڈ کے فرانسیسی نام Hollandais سے حاصل کیا ہے۔ فرانسیسی میں H کا تلفظ نہیں کیا جاتا، لہٰذا وہاں اسے’’اولاں دے‘‘ پڑھتے ہیں۔ کسی بنا پر اردو والوں نے فرانسیسی تلفظ اور املا کو خلط ملط کرکے’’ولندیز‘‘ بنا لیا۔
