Interesting Information on qit'a

The word Qita literally means ‘piece’ or ‘part’. It is a poetic form which comprises of at least two couplets, and can include as many couplets as possible. All these couplets are semantically related. Unlike Rubais, there are no fixed number of syllables (Auzan) that bind it. Structurally, a Qita is like a Ghazal, but without an opening-verse (Matla). Also, its rhyming elements are determined by that of the second hemistich of the first couplet. Which means, the second line of all the couplets that succeed the first one, are common with respect to the rhyme used in the first couplet’s second hemistich. For instance, Akhtar Ansari’s Qita, titled ‘Ikhfa-e-Haqiqat’: jo pūchhtā hai koī surḳh kyuuñ haiñ aaj āñkheñ to āñkheñ mal ke maiñ kahtā huuñ raat so na sakā hazār chāhūñ magar ye na kah sakūñgā kabhī ki raat rone kī ḳhvāhish thī aur ro na sakā Among the prominent poets of Qita are, Hali, Iqbal, Shibli, Akbar Allahabadi, Zafar Ali Khan and Akhtar Ansari. Qita is sometimes used in Ghazals and Qasidas as well. In ghazals, two or three coherent couplets are often brought together to express an idea sequentially. These are known as ‘Qita-Band’ couplets. Chronograms citing death-dates are also predominantly composed in the form of Qita
