معنی یہ لفظ واحد ہے، لیکن اسے استعمال مثل جمع کرتے ہیں: غلط: مجھے اس لفظ کا معنی نہیں معلوم۔ صحیح: مجھے اس لفظ کے معنی نہیں معلوم۔ غلطـ: معنی وہی ٹھیک ہے جو غالب نے لکھا ہے۔ صحیح: معنی وہی ٹھیک ہیں جو غالب نے لکھے ہیں۔ صحیح: اس لفظ کے جو معنی آپ نے بیان کئے ان کو میرے معنی پر تفوق ہے۔ لیکن اب اسم اشارہ ’’اِس‘‘ اور’’اُس‘‘ کے ساتھ ’’معنی‘‘ کو واحد بولنا بہتر ہے: مناسب: یہ بات اِس معنی میں غلط ہے کہ ۔۔۔ مناسب: جو معنی آپ بتا رہے ہیں اُس سے مجھے اختلاف ہے۔ ملحوظ رہے کہ اصل کے اعتبار سے اس لفظ میں الف مقصورہ ہے [معنیٰ] لیکن اب یہ تقریباً ہمیشہ اس طرح بولاجاتا ہے گویا آخری حرف الف مقصورہ نہیں، چھوٹی ی ہو۔ دلی میں البتہ ’’معنیٰ‘‘ بروزن ’’مانا‘‘ بھی بولتے ہیں۔ بعض لوگ یائے مجہول کے ساتھ ’’معنے‘‘ بولتے ہیں۔ اس تلفظ کی کوئی سند نہیں۔ ہندی میں یہی لفظ ’’مائنے‘‘ بن گیا ہے۔ ہندی کے اثر سے بعض اردو والے بھی ’’مائنے‘‘ بولنے لگے ہیں۔ اسے فوراً ترک ہونا چاہئے۔ بعض لوگ جمع ظاہر کرنے کے لئے’’معانی‘‘ بولتے ہیں۔ یہ غیر ضروری ہے۔ جب تک کہ کوئی خاص بات نہ ظاہر کرنی ہو، ’’معانی‘‘ کے استعمال سے محترز رہنا چاہئے۔ جیسے اقبال کے ان شعروں میں’’معانی‘‘ نہایت خوبی سے برتا گیا ہے ؎ کہتے تھے کہ پنہاں ہے تصوف میں شریعت جس طرح کہ الفاظ میں مضمر ہوں معانی حضرت نے مرے ایک شناسا سے یہ پوچھا اقبال کہ ہے قمری شمشاد معانی دیکھئے، ’’الف‘‘۔
