لفظ یہ لفظ آج کل تقریباً ہمیشہ مذکر بولا جاتا ہے۔ پہلے زمانے میں لکھنئو والے اسے پہلے مؤنث قرار دیتے تھے۔ علی اوسط رشک ؎ وصل کی رات بنا نامۂ شوق گیسو شام لفظیں ہیں سپیدی ہے سحر کاغذ کی لکھنؤ میں آج بھی یہ لفظ بعض لوگوں کی زبان پر مؤنث سنا جاتا ہے۔ مولانا علی نقی نقوی عرف نقن صاحب طاب ثراہ کی تفسیر قرآن میں یہ لفظ ہرجگہ مؤنث استعمال ہوا ہے۔ چنانچہ سورۂ بقر کی تفسیر میں ہے: (۱)یہاں قرآن نے صرف تین لفظیں صرف کی ہیں۔ (۲) آخر میں جو دو لفظیں ہیں، واتقوااللّٰہ، ویعلمکم اللّٰہ، یہ ہمارے خیال میں دونوں قسم کے احکام کے لحاظ سے ہیں۔ ’’لفظ‘‘ کی تانیث اہل لکھنؤ کے یہاں کوئی نئی بات نہیں، اور نہ شاذ ہے۔ غالب نے اپنے خط مورخہ ۶۵۸۱ میں یوسف علی خاں عزیز کو لکھا ہے: ’’لفظ‘‘ اس ملک [=دہلی] کے لوگوں کے نزدیک مذکر ہے۔ اہل پورب اس کو مؤنث بولتے ہیں۔
