الکحل انگریزی لفظ Alcohol ہر اس محلول کو کہتے ہیں جسے آگ پر ڈالیں تو بھڑک اٹھے۔ یہ در اصل عربی لفظ الکحل ہے، کیونکہ عربوں نے سب سے پہلے یہ بات دریافت کی تھی کہ سیسہ (جس کا سائنسی نام Antimony ہے) اور جس سے سرمہ (عربی میں الکحل) بنتا ہے، اسے کشید کرکے اس کا رسوب Precipitate نکالیں تووہ رقیق ہوتا ہے لیکن آگ پر ڈالنے سے بھڑک اٹھتا ہے۔ اس رسوب کو بھی عربوں نے الکحل کہا۔ انگریزی اور دوسری زبانوں نے اس لفظ کو عربی سے لے لیا اور اپنے اپنے تلفظ میں، لیکن اصل ہی معنی میں، استعمال کیا۔ اردو میں الکحل (بر وزن فاعلن) لکھنا بہتر ہے۔ لیکن بعض لوگ انگریزی کی نقل میں ’’الکوہل‘‘ بھی لکھتے ہیں اور اس کا تلفظ بر وزن فاعلن یا مفعولن کرتے ہیں۔ میں الکحل کو ترجیح دیتا ہوں۔
