طیب عربی میں بکسر تحتانی مشدد بمعنی’’پاک، خوشگوار، اچھا، خبیث کا الٹا‘‘ درست ہے۔ لیکن اردو میں تحتانی کے زبر کے ساتھ بروزن ’’نیر‘‘(بمعنی سورج) مستعمل ہے اور اردو کے لئے یہی درست ہے۔ آنحضرتؐ کے دو صاحب زادگان کے نام طیب اور طاہر یا مطاہر، اور بقول بعض طاہر اور مطاہر بتائے گئے ہیں۔ بعض کا یہ بھی کہنا ہے کہ صاحبزادۂ نبی کے نام کے طور پر’’طیب‘‘ مع فتحہ و تشدید تحتانی (یعنی طَیِّب) ہی درست ہے۔ یہ قول مختلف فیہ ہے، بہر حال اردو میں’’طیب‘‘ چھوٹی ی پر زبر کے ساتھ (بروزن’’نیر‘‘ بمعنی سورج )ہی درست ہے۔ کچھ ایسا معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ اگر یائے تحتانی مکسور مشدد کے پہلے فتحہ ہو تو اردو والے یائے تحتانی کے کسرہ کو فتحہ میں بدل دیتے ہیں۔ چنانچہ ذیل کے تمام الفاظ میں تحتانی مکسور ہے لیکن اردو میں مفتوح بولی جاتی ہے: جید، سید، میت، وغیرہ۔
