Interesting Information on sipaahii

Makhdoom Mohiuddin's famous Nazm "Sipahi" was written in the wake of the devastation of World War II. Owing to Manna Dey’s solemn voice, this Nazm was filmed in the movie ‘Us Ne Kaha Tha’, in the year 1960. An excerpt: ‘Jaane wale sipaahi se puchho wo kahaan jaa raha hai. Kaun dukhiya hai jo gaa rahi hai, bhuuke bachchon ko bahla rahi hai’ But the impetus of this Nazm was a Nauha or elegy, which Makhdoom had once heard in Lucknow at the time of Muharram. It goes like, ‘Qaid-Khane mein maadar pukaarii.n, sub.h hoti hai jaago sakiina’. This Nauha was composed in Raag Jogiya and was sung early in the morning which produced a stirring effect on the listener. Inspired by this, Makhdoom wrote his Nazm ‘Sipahi’, and used to recite it in the same tune very emotively. In the movie, Salil Chaudhary has composed it in a tune that is strikingly similar to the original melody.
