مکین ’’رہنے والا‘‘ کے معنی میں یہ لفظ اردو والوں کا گھڑا ہوا نہیں ہے، جیسا کہ بعض لوگ خیال کرتے ہیں۔ فارسی میں ’’مکین‘‘ زمانۂ قدیم سے ’’رہنے والا‘‘ کے معنی مستعمل ہے۔ ’’دہخدا‘‘ میں کئی شواہد فرخی سیستانی کے درج ہیں جن میں سے پہلا یہ ہے ؎ نہ ہر کس کو بہ ملک اندر مکیں باشد ملک باشد نہ نیلوفر بود ہر گل کہ اندر آبداں باشد یہی معنی اردو میں بھی ہیں۔ ’’منتخب‘‘ کے بقول عربی میں اس کے معنی ہیں ’’بلند منزلت‘‘، وغیرہ۔ اردو میں یہ معنی کہیں نہیں نظر آئے۔اردو میں ’’مکان ومکیں‘‘، ’’مکین و مکاں‘‘ وغیرہ عام ہیں۔
