مہارانی اردومیں یہ لفظ ’’مہاراجہ کی بیوی‘‘ کے معنی میں مستعمل ہے، جیسے’’مہارانی پٹیالہ‘‘۔ بعض لوگ اسے انگریزی Empress کا مرادف سمجھ کر’’انگلینڈ کی مہارانی‘‘، ’’روس کی مہا رانی‘‘ وغیرہ لکھنے لگے ہیں۔ یہ بالکل غلط اور قبیح ہے۔ اردو میں Empress کا ہم معنی کوئی لفظ نہیں۔ ’’ملکہ‘‘ یہاں دونوں الفاظ Queen اورEmpress کے لئے مروج ہے۔ اگر کسی کو بہت شوق ہو تو وہ Empress کے لئے’’ملکۂ عالیہ‘‘ لکھ سکتا ہے۔
