جاہلیت ’’جاہلیت‘‘ ایک اصطلاح ہے۔ اس سے عرب میں قبل ظہور اسلام و رسولؐ اسلام کا زمانہ مراد ہے۔’’جہالت‘‘ (عربی میں اول مفتوح، اردو میں عام طور پر اول مکسور بولتے ہیں) کے معنی ہیں: ’’ناواقفیت‘‘، لہٰذا’’ جاہل ہونے کی کیفیت‘‘۔ اردو میں ایک معنی اور تھے: ’’ ضدی پن، اڑیل پن‘‘۔ اب یہ معنی بہت شاذ ہیں۔
