- چاند یا سورج کا جزوی یا کلّی طور پر تاریک ہو جانا، بدر کے وقت اگر زمین سورج اور چاند کے درمیان آ جائے تو زمین کا سایہ چاند پر پڑتا ہے اور سارا چاند یا اس کا کچھ حصّہ سیاہ ہو جاتا ہے یہ چاند گرہن یا خسوف کہلاتا ہے، اگر ہلال کے وقت چاند زمین اور سورج کے درمیان آجائے تو سورج یا اس کا کچھ حصّہ سیاہ ہو جاتا ہے یہ سورج گرہن یا کسوف کہلاتا ہے (پرانے زمانے کے ہندوؤں کا خیال تھا کہ راہو چاند یا سورج کو پکڑ لیتا ہے تو گہن ہوتا ہے)
