فغاں اول مضموم۔ فارسی میں اول مکسور سے بھی بولتے ہیں، لیکن اردو میں مع اول مضموم ہی ہے۔ اٹھارویں صدی میں’’فغاں‘‘ کو مذکر بھی (یا مذکر ہی) قرار دیتے تھے۔ شاہ مبارک آبرو کا شعر ہے؎ کیوں کر نہ ہووے گرم فغاں عندلیب کا جلتا ہے گل کی آگ سے جاں عندلیب کا مندرجۂ ذیل شعر میر عبد الحی تاباں کا ہے ؎ نہیں کوئی دوست اپنا یار اپنا مہرباں اپنا سناؤں کس کو غم اپنا الم اپنا فغاں اپنا آتش نے بھی پرانے محاورے کا اتباع کرتے ہوئے ’’فغاں‘‘ کو مذکر باندھا ہے ؎ عشق گل میں وہی بلبل کا فغاں ہے کہ جو تھا پرتو مہ سے وہی حال کتاں ہے کہ جو تھا خان آرزو نے ’’چراغ ہدایت‘‘ میں لکھا ہے کہ ’’فغاں‘‘ دراصل ’’افغاں‘‘ کا مخفف ہے۔ اس کے برعکس’’آنند راج‘‘ میں’’فغاں‘‘ کو اصل لفظ اور’’افغاں‘‘ کو مزید علیہ بتایا ہے۔ بہرحال، اردو میں انیسویں صدی تک’’افغاں‘‘ بمعنی ’’فغاں‘‘ مستعمل تھا، اور مذکر تھا۔ مومن ؎ گر وہاں بھی یہ خموشی اثر افغاں ہوگا حشر میں کون مرے حال کا پرساں ہوگا اس دو غزلے کی دوسری غزل کے مطلع میں بھی ’’افغاں‘‘ بندھا ہے، اور مذکر بندھا ہے۔’’نور اللغات‘‘ نے’’افغاں‘‘ کو مختلف فیہ لکھ کر کہا ہے کہ تانیث مرجح ہے۔ یہ قول غالباََ ’’امیراللغات ‘‘ کے متبع میں ہے، کیوں کہ ’’امیراللغات‘‘ میں’’افغاں‘‘ کو مؤنث لکھا ہے۔ آج کل’’افغاں‘‘ بمعنی’’فغاں‘‘ نہیں بولا جاتا۔ اوراس زمانے میں’’فغاں‘‘ بہرحال مؤنث ہے لیکن پرانے لوگوں نے جو اسے مذکر لکھا ہے تو یہ ان کے زمانے کے رواج کے عین مطابق تھا، عجزنظم کی بنا پرنہ تھا، جیسا کہ بعض لوگوں نے سمجھا ہے۔
