چاہنا اس مصدر کاایک خاص استعمال اردو میں ہے، کہ مستقبل قریب میں واقع ہونے والی کسی بات کو اس بات کے مصدر کے ساتھ ’’چاہنا‘‘ کی تصریفی شکل لگا کر ادا کرتے ہیں۔ لیکن شرط یہ ہے کہ مصدر کی جو شکل استعمال ہوگی وہ ماضی مطلق مذکر کی ہو گی : دو بجا چاہتے ہیں [بجنے ہی والے ہیں]۔ یہ دیوار اب گرا چاہتی ہے [گرنے ہی والی ہے]۔ طوفان اب آیا چاہتا ہے [آنے ہی والا ہے]۔ روشنی غائب ہوا چاہتی ہے [غائب ہونے ہی والی ہے]۔ پرندوں کی قطاریں اڑا چاہتی ہیں [اڑنے ہی والی ہیں]۔ عورتیں پوجا کرکے اٹھا چاہتی ہیں [اٹھنے ہی والی ہیں]۔ تارے آسمان پر نکلا چاہتے ہیں [نکلنے ہی والے ہیں]۔ اسی پر قیاس کرکے مستقبل اور ماضی بھی بنا تے ہیں: عورتیں پوجا کرکے اٹھا چاہتی تھیں/اٹھا چاہتی ہوں گی۔ دہلی میں اب صبح ہوا چاہتی تھی/ہوا چاہتی ہوگی۔ یہ استعمال اردو کا مخصوص صرف ہے۔ دیگر زبانوں میں اس کاپتہ نہیں۔ چونکہ اس کے کوئی قاعدے نہیں ہیں کہ کس مصدر کے ساتھ یہ اچھا لگتا ہے اور کس کے ساتھ نہیں، اس لئے ہندی والے اسے مشکل ہی سے نبھا پاتے ہیں۔
