بوم واؤ معروف، بمعنی ’’الو‘‘ یہ لفظ ہمیشہ مذکر ہے، اس کا مؤنث کچھ نہیں۔ دیکھئے،’’ تانیث سے عاری نام، جانوروں کے‘‘۔ فارسی میں اس لفظ کے معنی ’’زمین‘‘ بھی ہیں۔ ان معنی میں اردو میں تنہا مستعمل نہیں، شاعری میں شاید کبھی برتا گیا ہو۔ادبی نثر میں بھی فقروں یا مرکب شکل میں نظر آتا ہے، مثلاً’’بوم وبر‘‘[خطۂ زمین]، ’’زاد بوم [جائے پیدائش]‘‘؛’’مرز بوم‘‘ [وطن، ملک]۔ شیکسپیئر، ڈنکن فوربس، اور پلیٹس نے زمین کے معنی میں ’’بوم‘‘ کو مذکر لکھا ہے۔ ’’نور‘‘ میں کچھ درج نہیں۔ ’’اردو لغت، تاریخی اصول پر‘‘ میں مؤنث لکھا ہے، اورآج کل یہی مرجح ہے۔اس لفظ کا سنسکرت تت سم ’’بھومِ‘‘ ہے۔ اس سے اردو میں دو تدبھو بنے ہیں، ’’بھوئیں‘‘ بروزن فع، اور ’’بھوم‘‘ بروزن فعل۔ بھوج پوری میں ’’بھوئیاں‘‘ بروزن فع لن بھی ہے، اردو میں نہیں سنا گیا۔ ’’بھوئیں‘‘ بھی ولی کے بعد شاید کسی نے نہ باندھا ہو ؎ خاکساراں کے انجھو حق کوں ہیں منظور نظر جوں کہ مقبول ہیں خورشید کو بھوئیں سوں شبنم
