الگ تھلگ بعض لوگ سمجھتے ہیں کہ ’’الگ تھلگ‘‘ اور’’الگ‘‘ میں کوئی فرق نہیں، بلکہ ’’الگ‘‘ کے مفہوم کو زور دے کر کہنا ہو تو ’’الگ تھلگ‘‘ کہنا چاہئے۔ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ ’’الگ تھلگ‘‘ میں بے تعلقی اور مغائرت کا مفہوم ہے، اور’’الگ‘‘ میں ’’شامل کا نقیض، دور، جدا‘‘ وغیرہ کا مفہوم ہے۔ ظفر اقبال ؎ تیرگی خیر میں شعلۂ شر ہے الگ عیب ہے اپنا جدا، اپنا ہنر ہے الگ اس کے برخلاف، کہ ’’الگ تھلگ‘‘ ایک نفسیاتی صورت حال کو ظاہر کرتا ہے۔ داغ ؎ کچھ اس کو وہم کچھ اس کو غرور رہتا ہے الگ تھلگ وہ بہت دور دور رہتا ہے بہادر شاہ ظفر ؎ کیونکہ رہے نہ ہم سے وہ ماہ جبیں الگ تھلگ رہتا ہے اک زمانے سے ماہ مبیں الگ تھلگ دیا شنکر نسیم ؎ دن بھر تو الگ تھلگ رہے وہ دو وقت سے شام کے ملے وہ اس فقرے کو’’سہج سے، صفائی سے، بے لاگ‘‘ کے معنی میں بھی بولتے تھے، مثلاً ’’امیر اللغات‘‘ میں فقرہ درج ہے: انھوں نے نال ایسی الگ تھلگ اٹھا لی کہ دیکھنے والے دنگ رہ گئے۔ لیکن اب یہ معنی بہت شاذ ہیں، بلکہ معدوم ہیں۔ موجودہ زمانے میں جو نئے معنی اس فقرے کو پہنائے جارہے ہیں وہ البتہ غلط اور واجب الترک ہیں: غلط: متعدی امراض کے بیماروں کو الگ تھلگ رکھنا چاہئے۔ غلط:پناہ گزینوں کو شہر سے الگ تھلگ رکھا گیا۔ غلط: اس معاملے کو الگ تھلگ رکھئے، اس پر پھر غور کریں گے۔ غلط: جلسے کے سب شرکا ایک ساتھ نہیں آئے، الگ تھلگ آئے۔ مندرجہ بالا چار میں سے اول تین میں ’’الگ تھلگ‘‘ کی جگہ صرف ’’الگ‘‘ درست ہے۔ چوتھے جملے میں ’’الگ تھلگ‘‘ نہیں، ’’الگ الگ‘‘ کہنا چاہئے۔
