توقع ’’توقع‘‘ عمومی لفظ ہے، اس میں اچھا، برا، اور غیرجانب دار(یعنی عامۃ الورود) تینوں پہلو ہیں۔ لہٰذا یہ بڑی حد تک’’امکان‘‘ کے معنی رکھتا ہے۔ مثلاً: (۱) مجھے ان سے جو توقع تھی وہ پوری نہ ہوئی۔ (۲) توقع ہے کہ اس بار وہ کامیاب نہ ہوگا۔ معنی کی شدت کے اعتبار سے ’’توقع‘‘ کے نیچے’’اندیشہ‘‘ ہے، جس کے معنی’’خوف‘‘ کے ہیں، اور توقع کے اوپر’’امید‘‘ ہے، جو ہمیشہ اچھے معنی میں استعمال ہوتا ہے۔ مندرجہ ذیل پرغورکیجئے: (۱) آج بارش کی توقع ہے۔ (یعنی کہنے والے کے دل میں کوئی خوف یا امیدیا تمنا نہیں ہے کہ بارش ہو۔ وہ صرف ایک اطلاع دے رہا ہے۔) (۲) آج بارش کا اندیشہ ہے۔ (یعنی کہنے والے کے دل میں بارش کا خوف ہے۔) (۳) آج بارش کی امید ہے۔ (یعنی کہنے والے کو بارش کی تمنا تھی اور آج اس کے پورے ہونے کا امکان ہے۔) غالب کا شعرہے ؎ جب توقع ہی اٹھ گئی غالب کیوں کسی کا گلہ کرے کوئی یہاں ظاہر ہے کہ متکلم عمومی بات کہہ رہا ہے کہ مجھے نہ کسی سے کچھ اندیشہ ہے، نہ کسی سے کچھ امید ہے۔ یعنی میرے خیال میں اب کسی بات کا امکان ہی باقی نہیں، تو پھرکسی اچھی بات کے نہ ہونے یا کسی بری بات کے واقع ہونے کا گلہ کیوں ہو؟ ایک اور مثال: (۱) امید ہے کہ مریض آج رات مرجائے گا۔ ظاہر ہے کہ یہاں عام حالات میں’’اندیشہ‘‘ کا محل ہے۔ لیکن اگر کہنے والا شخص مریض کا دشمن ہے، تو ’’امید‘‘ کا محل ہے۔ اور اگر کہنے والے کو اس بات سے کوئی خاص دلچسپی نہیں کہ مریض مرے یا بچ جائے، تو وہ کہے گا: (۲) توقع ہے کہ مریض ۔۔۔
